History

The Odyssey Class follows the primary, secondary, and twin nacelles design that has become the standard hull arrangement for Starfleet ships. These ships also have the stream lined design that allows the ship's warp filed to be more energy efficient and lest damaging to the fabric of space.

The primary hull houses the ship's main bridge module at the top of the primary hull. The primary hull also houses the medical and science labs. The bulk of the ship's crew and guest quarters are located in the primary hull. The secondary engineering and warp core are also housed in the primary hull. This secondary core can be used as an auxiliary power source for the ship or to power the primary hull warp coils while the primary hull is operating in independent flight mode. With these warp coils the primary hull is able to cruise at warp 6 or maintain an emergency speed of 8.89 for up to twelve hours. There are two of the ship's four impulse engines that are housed within the primary hull allowing this hull to reach a top sub-light speed of 1/3 the speed of light. The ship's single shuttle bay is also housed within the primary hull

The two hulls are connected by two neck structures that extend from the ventral surface of the primary hull and attach to the dorsal surface of the secondary hull.

The secondary hull houses the ships main warp core. The Odyssey class carries a single Aquarius Class escort cruiser in a dedicated docking cradle at the aft most point of the secondary hull between the connect points between the secondary hull and the warp nacelle support pylons. The ship's second pair of impulse engines are housed within the support pylons. These pylons hold the twin nacelles so they flank the bridge module and the ramscoops have a clear forward line of sight. Major ship systems such as the main deflector dish and long range sensor systems are housed within the secondary hull.

The Odyssey Class is equipped with Regenerative Shielding System to protect the ship from hazardous conditions. These ships are also equipped with nineteen Type XII Phaser arrays spread across the dorsal and ventral surface of the primary and secondary hull. There are also six torpedo launchers where four of the launchers cover the forward firing arch and the other two cover the aft firing arch.

The crew of the Triumphant were required to undergo six weeks' worth of training while the Admiral was briefed on the very role of the ship, her operational function and the relationship between the Civilian Sector and the rest of the ship.

CLASS SERVICE HISTORY

The Design for the Odyssey class was submitted to the A.S.D.B. in 2378 and after review the ship design was approved in 2379. Construction of the USS Odyssey was started later that year. In 2384 as construction was nearing completion the USS Aquarius was docked with the Odyssey for the first time. This high lighted a design flaw with the docking system where the air locks between the two ships did not properly align keeping them from being used. This led to the system undergoing a review and design that led to the docking latches being modified to pull the Aquarius further into the docking cradle so that the air locks could properly align. The Odyssey was launched from dry dock in 2386 for a shake down cruise. During this cruise the ship systems were tested and modified until the ship was found to be ready for service. In 2387 the Odyssey was fully commissioned and launched for her first mission.

Since 2387 the Odyssey Class has been seen at the edges of explored space poking into the unexplored regions of space. While this ship is still new the Odyssey Class ships have been operating without any major problems. With each ship expected to have a life span of 105 years it expected to be in service well into the 2400's and might even prove to be a worth successor to venerable ship classes such as the Excelsior class




The Aquarius Class is a single hull design similar to ships such as the Defiant Class. These ships were originally designed as an auxiliary craft for the Odyssey Class but their use has expanded to being used as support craft for Starbases and as patrol ships monitoring the Federation borders and other such remote areas.

The ships of the Aquarius Class are equipped with Variable Geometry Warp Pylons. When docking with a Odyssey Class ship the pylons pull the warp nacelles into the docked position next to the hull of the ship. This allows the Aquarius class ship to fit within the docking cradle built int to the secondary hull of a Odyssey Class ship.

The ships are equipped with four Type XII Phaser arrays and fourPulse Phaser Cannons. There are two phaser arrays built into the dorsal surface of the outer hull and the other two are built into the dorsal surface of the outer hull. Two of the phaser cannons and one torpedo launcher are mounted to cover the forward firing arch while the other two cannons and the remaining torpedo launcher cover the aft firing arch.

While the Aquarius is not primarily a ship of exploration and research they are equipped with extensive sensor systems and two science labs. The Aquarius class is designed to make controlled planetary landing and then returning to orbit. To assist in this the Aquarius Class is equipped with landing gear

The Aquarius class design was submitted to the A.S.D.B. in 2378 as the auxiliary craft for the Odyssey Class. Construction of the USS Aquarius was started in 2379 and completed 2384. That same year the Aquarius docked with the the Odyssey for the first time. The process worked as designed but the air locks between the two ships did not align but after the docking latches were modified the air locks would align properly allowing personnel and materials to pass between the two ships. The Aquarius was launched for a full shake down cruise in 2385 to test the ship's systems while operating as an independent ship. In 2386 docked once more with the Odyssey for a second shake down cruise with the Odyssey and in 2387 the Aquarius is officially commissioned.

As this is a newer ship class their numbers are still low but are climbing. The Aquarius class is starting to take over as a patrol ship allowing larger more capable ships undertake missions of exploration and discovery. These ships have also been found assigned to Starbases across the Federation.
